About Rustenburg Local Municipality (NW373)

Description: The Rustenburg Local Municipality is a Category B municipality situated within the Bojanala Platinum District in the North West Province. It is one of the five municipalities in the district. It is home to Boekenhoutfontein, the farm of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic. Rustenburg is a large town situated at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range. Rustenburg (meaning ‘town of rest’ or ‘resting place’) was proclaimed a township in 1851. This large town is situated some 112km north-west and is a 90-minute drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is a malaria-free area. It is the fastest growing municipality in South Africa and the most populous municipality in the North West Province. Main Economic Sectors: Mining and quarrying (55.17%), general government (7.78%), community, social and personal services (6.74%), business services (5.86%), wholesale and retail trade (4.77%), transport and retail trade (4.77%), transport and storage (4.21%), electricity, gas and water (2.60%), construction (2.23%), finance and insurance (1.21%), agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.79%), manufacturing (0.25%).
